The Streaming Wars Have Found a New Domain: The NBA
With Amazon Prime reportedly acquiring NBA streaming rights, is the league destined to go the way of the NFL, ATP/WTA, and MLB?
There are three constants in modern society. Death, taxes, and streaming services. We’ve been fooled into thinking that the latter constant was anything but inevitable in sports.
Over the years, we’ve been told that streaming services were set to replace cable TV in a more flexible and affordable way. While that’s somewhat held true, it’s becoming readily apparent that the way in which streaming will replace cable is by becoming cable — service packages and all. While we may be distracted by playoff basketball, it’s important to talk about what’s happening behind the scenes at the moment.
Unfortunately, the NBA seems to be going the way of the NFL, MLB, and the ATP/WTA, forcing fans to fragment both their platforms and, most importantly, their wallets in order to watch all the games they love. It was bound to happen, though it’s becoming much more real according to recent reports.
