In what was supposed to be yesterday’s piece — before I forgot what day it was — we took a gander at the league’s best young contributors on a per-minute basis. By taking all of the players under 26 years of age and throwing their stats into a simple formula, we got the chance to talk about guys like Moses Moody and Trendon Watford, who might shine in an expanded role.

Today, we’re doing something similar, but also different. One of the most interesting NBA archetypes includes the guys who don’t score a lot of points but generate tons of them — in other words, the true point guards of the league. In a similar vein to the earlier piece, we’re looking at per-minute stats, using them to find players that meet the following criteria:

  • 70th percentile or above in assists per minute

  • 30th percentile or below in points per minute

  • Under 26 years old

By doing so, we’ll be able to find the guys that, generally, every team wants (as long as they don’t need a pure scorer); the unselfish assist engines, essentially. Below you’ll find the top three (and, actually, the only three), along with my takes on what makes them shine and what this upcoming season might look like for each of them…
